An Introduction to African American History

Course presentation :

This course will survey the history of the United States from 1619, the date of the arrival of the first enslaved African men and women on the American continent. The lectures will focus on several crucial moments in US history, from the colonial era to the present day, through the lens of the African American experience. The tutorials will be mainly dedicated to the analysis of primary sources of various natures (texts, but also visual and audio documents) that will enable students to anchor the timeline facts in historical reality.

Compulsory reading :

Before attending the class, students should make themselves familiar with The 1619 Project :, a collection of articles and essays that "aims to reframe [American] history by placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of [the] national narrative."
